McClellan's Hurricane Katrina Housing

The spirit of service has formed the fabric of Fort McClellan throughout its history. A spirit that has been highlighted in the days since Hurricane Katrina. On Labor Day, just one week after the devastation of the communities along the Gulf coast, over two thousand people donated their holiday for a Labor Day of Love to prepare a welcoming environment for those that have lost their homes to Hurricane Katrina.

Today McClellan has two FEMA operated facilities to house evacuees. The vast open halls of the former military training barracks known as the "starships", have been divided into private living spaces with single rooms or double rooms for families. The rooms are equipped with basic furniture including beds, air conditioning units, closets, small refrigerators and televisions. Between the rooms are larger common spaces. Bathroom and shower facilities have private stalls and changing areas. Meals are being catered.

FEMA’s Noble Training Center has also opened its dormitories to evacuees. Evacuees that are elderly or have health problems or disabilities may benefit Noble’s 40 first-floor rooms. Handicapped facilities are also being prepared at the starships.

Katrina evacuees wishing housing at McClellan can contact the local FEMA office and speak to Casi at 256.847.2991 or by fax at 256.847.2996. For information on health and safety, contact 256.847.2994.

Those wishing to make donations should contact the Salvation Army at 256.236.5643.

Alabamians wishing to volunteer or donate to the relief effort can sign up online through the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives at www.servealabama.gov. Individuals are asked to provide contact information and list skills they have that are helpful in hurricane recovery efforts.
