Casey Estates to open soon
For the past year Building 3137, the former Officer’s Quarters, has been under renovation to become housing for seniors. The building was originally constructed in 1980 with 100 small efficiency apartments; when it reopens later this month it will contain 49 newly refurbished one-bedroom apartments. The apartments feature a spacious living room, bedroom, bath, and kitchen/dining area. Each apartment is individually heated and air-conditioned and designed with energy efficiency and easy accessibility in mind. Three apartments are specially designed for physically handicapped persons and all five levels are served by an elevator. A large community room is available for use by the residents and their guests, and a common, coin-operated laundry room is also available. Conveniently located within the former fort, Casey Estates is located behind Longleaf Lodge with easy access to Jacksonville State University’s McClellan Campus where Casey Estates residents will benefit from the University’s offer to provide services through its College of Nursing and Health Sciences, programs in social work and potential cultural activities. Within walking distance, the residents will be able to enjoy the parks, fitness center, and events held in Longleaf Park such as the annual Music at McClellan featuring the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Funding for the project has been provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and is one of 50 such projects developed by Mansermar, Inc. of Duluth, Georgia. Apartments are available to qualified persons 62 years of age or older, with rents based on income. Applications are still being accepted. For additional information on eligibility or the application process, contact Property Manager Rhonda Threatt at (205) 473-5085.
