Broadway Towers soon to be housing for elderly
This building was originally built in 1980 as Officer’s Quarters for U.S. Military. It was comprised of 100 units of small efficiency apartments. Through a Section 202 Supportive Housing Capital Advance, the subsidiary of Broadway Towers, Housing for Elderly, Inc., was granted this money. Both Broadway Towers and Housing for Elderly are non-profit organizations specializing in the provision of affordable housing to senior citizens. David Christian of Christian & Associates Architects, a local architect with years of experience in this type of housing, has designed a beautiful energy efficient plan to bring accessibility and safety to our residents. The closing of the grant was finalized on August 23, 2006 in Birmingham. The construction on site began the very next day by Hardaway Construction Corp of Nashville, Tennessee. Rehabilitation of this building will take approximately 12 months to complete. Mansermar, Inc. of Duluth, Georgia, the development firm for this community has worked on this proposal for several years. Mansermar, with 55 similar communities under management, will be the Property Management Company for the property as well. With caring leadership, this facility will provide the perfect alternative Governed by Fair Housing Laws, Housing for Elderly cannot accept applications or start a waiting list for this community until 90 days prior to the projected date of occupancy. This will probably occur in Mid-May, 2007. Notification to the public by means of local advertisements in the paper and on the radio will occur when the dates are set to allow the receipt of applications. The McClellan Joint Powers Authority and the City of Anniston demonstrated great support for the development of this badly needed facility within the Anniston community. The JPA spent countless hours with the developer in evaluating their integrity and their experience, working on the plan for this particular site and also accommodating special circumstances and timeframes that were specific to a federally-funded development. Broadway Towers and Mansermar have expressed their gratitude to Mayor Chip Howell and the City of Anniston, as well as the JPA and in particular Renee Kirby, Legal Counsel to the JPA, for their professionalism and commitment to this affordable housing community. Building 3137 is safely and conveniently located off of BG DH Stem Avenue providing easy accessibility by way of the new Summerall Gate Road Entrance, and yet nestled perfectly for privacy in the wooded property behind the Long Leaf Lodge. Adjacent to Jacksonville State University (JSU) the residents will benefit from the University’s offer to provide services through its College of Nursing and Health Sciences, programs in social work, and potential cultural activities. Within walking distance, the residents will be able to enjoy the parks, fitness center, and events held in Longleaf Park such as the annual Music at McClellan featuring the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.
