Bains Gap Road reopens

Photo: Scott BradshawAfter nearly 8 years, Bains Gap Road was reopened on February 22, 2007. The road was closed to traffic in 1999 with the closing of Fort McClellan. Since that time, work has been completed to clear the area of potential unexploded ordinance left over from nearly a century of use by the military. The 5-mile drive will allow easy access between the McClellan area and the Choccolocca and White Plains communities on the east side of the ridge. It will also provide an additional evacuation route in case of an incident from the Anniston Army Depot weapons incineration program.

Aside from convenience, Bains Gap is a scenic route through one of our newest National Wildlife Refuges, the 9,016 acre Mountain Longleaf Refuge that contains the only remaining stands of old growth mountain longleaf pine forest and some of the best remaining fire maintained mountain longleaf pine forests. Its large tracts of unfragmented forest across Alabama’s third highest mountain ridge make it worth the time and effort to travel.

Anniston Mayor Chip Howell, Dr. Billy McAnnally and Robert Downing cut the ribbon to officially open the road. Photo: Scott BradshawTo reach Bains Gap Road, travel through McClellan from Batzell Gate to Iron Mountain Road. Watch for signs to Lide Hall.Take a right on Iron Mountain Road and travel about an eighth of a mile. Approximately thirty feet past Lide Hall, the gate on the left leads to Bains Gap. The road has a 25 mph speed limit and is open between the hours of 4 a.m. and 10 p.m.
