 | McClellan to host New Year's Eve Fireworks show
Anniston residents get an extra helping of "boom" this holiday season. The $10,000 fireworks show the city had planned for July 3 but postponed because of the drought will launch instead on New Year's Eve at 7 p.m. Parks and Recreation Department program director Angie Shockley said the New Year's show will be something new for the city, but should be a good event for families. The rockets will launch from a parking lot on Exchange Avenue near the Longleaf Lodge at McClellan. The coordinated explosions should be visible from all over the grounds of the old fort.

 | New Lowe’s at McClellan opens its doors to public
Before the Lowe’s Home Improvement Store in Anniston officially opened Thursday, Jeff Crow waited at a cash register. The White Plains resident came to Anniston by way of the recently reopened Bains Gap Road. “I love it,” he said. “It’s convenient. It’s a great location.” The 175 employees of the new Anniston store can expect more of the same comments from customers over the next few weeks. Thursday’s board-cutting ceremony —what else? — officially introduced the Model City to its newest neighbor.

McClellan's Miki Schneider named as VP of Association of Defense Communities
Among the stacks of maps and planning documents, tucked in the back corner of the JPA Headquarters building, you’ll find Miki Schneider moving from task to task among what to others would be a bewildering array of responsibilities. Her official title is Director of Planning and her responsibilities include review of all environmental documents related to the 18,000 acre former Fort McClellan. She has recently been named as the Vice President of the Association of Defense Communities.

Fort McClellan’s history as a military base was shaped by politics and the economy, according to a military historian. Its story is one of gender, race and the good things the base did for Anniston. It’s history worth preserving, David Childress said Saturday.

Fall Fest returns to McClellan October 13, 2007
Mark your calendar and set aside October 13th for the second annual Fall Fest at McClellan. Roughly 750 people turned out last year on a beautiful October day to enjoy a day of celebration of agriculture, regional foods, and local arts and crafts on McClellan's historic parade grounds.  | Howell’s efforts rewarded: Mayor named ‘Public Official of the Year’
Anniston Mayor Chip Howell’s efforts to get McClellan in the line for federal money to clean the former fort earned him the title of “Public Official of the Year” last week. Howell, who is vice chairman of the Joint Powers Authority redeveloping McClellan, got the award at the annual Association of Defense Communities (ADC) conference in Miami.

They chose daffodils. That’s right daffodils, and plenty of them! Each spring, every yellow flower, like a tiny billboard screams “look at me, I’m beautiful”.

 | Bains Gap Road Reopened
Bains Gap Road was reopened on February 22, 2007. The road was closed to traffic in 1999 with the closing of Fort McClellan. Since that time, work has been completed to clear the area of potential unexploded ordinance left over from nearly a century of use by the military. The 5-mile drive provide an additional evacuation route in case of an incident from the Anniston Army Depot weapons incineration program.
