Draft development report released by Angelou Economics
The JPA has recognized the opportunity to create a research park within the McClellan campus and selected Angelou Economics to evaluate potential strategies. As part of the planning process, Angelou Economics has release the first draft of the McClellan R&D Strategic Plan.

 | JPA Presents Checks to City, County and Schools
At its work session on Tuesday, December 12, the Joint Powers Authority presented checks to the City of Anniston, Calhoun County and the Anniston City Schools totaling $122,996.04. These funds were collected as part of the lease payments from several federal agencies at McClellan and represents payments in lieu of taxes.

 | Fort McClellan's Historical Significance Recognized
Four areas within the former Fort McClellan were added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 11, 2006. The National Register is the Nation’s official listing of sites worthy of preservation and is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate and protect historic and archeological resources.

McClellan R&D Strategy for Success
Can McClellan become a research and development hub, a mecca for innovators and visionaries, and a draw for the film industry besides? If you ask anyone attending a strategy meeting at the Buckner Center last Thursday afternoon, and the answer would be an enthusiastic yes. Chris Engle, Vice President of Angelou Economics, told the group of business and community leaders that McClellan has 80% of the assets that make a good research park already in place.

 | Fall Fest - a new tradition at McClellan
On a beautiful October afternoon, roughtly 750 people turned out to enjoy a day of celebration of agriculture, regional foods, and local arts and crafts on McClellan's historic parade grounds. By all accounts this inaugural Fall Fest was a success.

The McClellan JPA recently closed on the sale of Centurion Chapel and a Self Help Center to Grace Fellowship Community Church. Grace Fellowship is a relatively new local church, self-describe as a multi-racial, interdenominational, Bible church.

 | WJXS TV 24 Moving to McClellan: Northeast Alabama’s CNN affiliate chooses central location
The McClellan JPA is pleased to announce the sale of the former Class VI Store, to Alabama Heritage Properties, LLC, operators of WJXS TV 24. The building, once used to sell alcoholic beverages at the former military base, is in for a radical change. The facility will undergo a thorough refit in order to host state-of-the-art broadcast and production facilities. It will serve as TV 24’s new and permanent home and reach over 225,000 households in Northeast Alabama.

 | Ivory-billed Woodpecker Scientist linked to McClellan
A recent rediscovery of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker has links with McClellan through Dr. Geoffrey E. Hill. Dr Hill and his colleagues at Auburn University announced recently that they may have found evidence of the thought-to-be-extinct Ivory-billed Woodpecker in the swamps of the Florida panhandle. Hill is a scientist that is well known to McClellan’s scientific community through his work on the effects of forest fragmentation on the nesting density of ground-nesting birds in the 1990s. He also has published work on breeding bird density of Mountain Longleaf Pine forests in the nearby Talladega National Forest.

Members of the Joint Powers Authority and other community leaders concluded three days of informal meetings in early September to discuss bringing a national research center to McClellan. A second session of will convene again next in mid November.

Broadway Towers is pleased to announce the closing of their $5,043,200 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the Redevelopment of Building 3137 of Fort McClellan. This redevelopment will provide 49 beautiful one-bedroom apartments for senior citizens while providing a substantial rehabilitation of this 5-story building.

 | Bains Gap Road to open soon
The cleanup schedule for Bains Gap Road has gotten another boost. The work week has been expanded and additional crews have been added to clear the road and surrounding area of possible unexploded ordinance. If all goes as planned, Bains Gap Road may reopen as early as December, several months ahead of the original March 2007 target date.

The deparment of Homeland Security on Wednesday eliminated the former Fort McClellan from a list of finalists for the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility, a research center that will develop ways to protect thenation's public health and food supply from terrorism.

 | ECC Wins Contract to Remediate Former Fort McClellan
ECC won a contract for munitions and explosives of concern remediation at the former Fort McClellan in Anniston, Alabama. Hoyt W. "Chip" Howell, mayor of Anniston, said, "We are excited about the ordnance cleanup work beginning at McClellan. This is the opportunity we have worked for to have the cleanup in private hands and on a time schedule to meet our development needs."

 | New Signs at McClellan Give Clear Direction
New directional signs are being installed around the old fort. Funded by the McClellan JPA, the new signs are meant to replace the clutter of individual signs that often caused confusion. The new signs are designed with long-lasting, large and simple text that is fully reflective for night drivers.

The recent rediscovery of the Monteith Amphitheater on the former Fort McClellan has a lot of people smiling lately. The outdoor theater, with a capacity of 12,000 people, seems the perfect venue for McClellan's budding performing arts.

Local vegetable farmers don't spend time in the dirt for big money, but for good food. Many barely cover expenses, but the time and effort is paid back in smiles each weekend at the Saturday Market at Buckner Center. Local produce is not the only thing you will find; the bright canopies also shade the wares of local artists, fresh flowers, and dairy products.

Congressman Mike Rogers wants to put the training of thousands of new U.S. Border Patrol agents up for bid, and he has notified Jacksonville State University to prepare a proposal that would bring them to McClellan.

 | Zannie Theater to host ongoing independent film festival
Local film lovers will have the opportunity to explore the alternative side of Hollywood, though the Film Club at Zannie. Lori Ryan, creative director for the Buckner Center, where the Zannie Theater is located, has been compiling a wish list of movies. "We're going to start off showing two movies a month," says Ryan. "But choosing the movies was the hard part because there're so many great ones out there that most people haven't seen."

The Joint Powers Authority voted on March 2nd to sell 17 acres of land to Earlon McWhorter, who plans to develop the site for home improvement retailer, Lowe's. The property, located at the junction of Alabama 21 and the new Summerall Gate Road, is a prime spot for a retail business. |
