Art After Hours: The Work of Dana Brown
Dana Brown's current work in watercolor focuses on an unexpected subject: muscular machinery such as railroad, oil drilling, and farm equipment. A second body of work is in casein. Like watercolor, casein is a challenging medium but is less familiar to most people.
"There is a good chance you aren't familiar with casein," writes Dana. "Casein is a very old medium, predating oil and egg tempera, but isn't commonly used by artists today. It is a waterbased medium that uses milk protein as the binder. Consequently, it can be used transparently, semi-opaquely or as a totally opaque medium -- an artist can use one approach throughout a painting or combine all in the same piece. Casein lost favor with painters after the advent of acrylics but still offers unique qualities that we can appreciate and enjoy. Articles about casein have cropped up in magazines lately and there is an annual national exhibition of casein work in New York -- it seems to be enjoying a resurgence."
